Baboons are African and Arabian Old World monkeys belonging to the genus Papio, part of the subfamily Cercopithecinae. Baboons are some of the world's largest monkeys. There are five species of baboon—olive, yellow, chacma, Guinea, and hamadryas—scattered across various habitats in Africa and Arabia. The baboon, like other Old World monkeys, does not have a prehensile (gripping) tail, but it is still able to climb when necessary.
The HAMADRYAS BABOON, also referred to as the Sacred Baboon, was often depicted in ancient Egyptian art and revered as the Egyptian god of learning. Now extinct in Europe, the species can be found in Ethiopia, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. No other baboon specie's lives as far north as the Hamadryas baboon. These highly intelligent primates’ have a unique nature that adds to their striking silver manes and the pink faces of adult males.
POPULATION STATUS LEAST CONCERN: The Hamadryas face little encroachment from humans in their environment and have only a handful of natural predators. Because of their high survival rate, they can live up to 30 years in the wild.
