POLAR BEARS are the largest land carnivores. Growing up to 8 ft tall and 1,760 lbs, they vastly outweigh the next largest in line, the Kodiak Brown Bear, by several hundred pounds. Their immense size means that humans are their only natural predators. Although good swimmers, they can't swim quick enough to catch a seal in open water. Instead, they prefer to wait near a seal breathing hole or near the edge of the ice for a seal to surface, and then they grab their snack.
POPULATION STATUS VULNERABLE: In parts of the US, Canada and Greenland there is a managed polar bear hunting season as long as the meat and hides are used for food and clothing. Whole hides may be used for subsistence needs, kept as trophies, or sold on the open market as they provide important income for local communities in Canada and Greenland. Sport hunting of polar bears only occurs in Canada and must be guided by local Inuit hunters.
